About the Program

PM is one of the grand institutions of Australian public broadcasting. The program celebrated its 30th anniversary last July - three decades of reporting Australia and the world.

It was the first Australian current affairs program to use journalists, not announcers or actors, as hosts. The founding comperes were John Highfield and Laurie Bryant. Tim Bowden was the executive producer and reporters included Ray Martin, Paul Barber and Paul Murphy.

Huw Evans anchored the program for 12 years, followed by Paul Murphy, Ellen Fanning, Monica Attard and now Mark Colvin.

PM's timeslot at the end of the day has always given it a strong position from which to produce commentary and analysis on the political events of the moment, both in Canberra and the state capitals.

The PM team produces ABC Radio's Budget Special each year. The program came live from Canberra for the full two weeks of the Constitutional Convention and Mark Colvin joined chief political correspondent, Matt Peacock, for live coverage of the federal election.

PM has had a broader international perspective from the beginning too. Bowden pioneered the use of a more informal style in interviewing the ABC's network of foreign correspondents, and the foreign bureau's work has always played an important part in the program.

PM is a national forum of enduring value. It is well placed for another three decades of public broadcasting.

http://www.audioenglish.net/

Air Travel
Confirmation of flight reservation / I´d like to reconfirm my flight

At passport control / Do you have a return ticket?

Railway travel / A ticket to London, please.

Rent-A-Car / I´d like to rent a car.

Booking a hotel room / I´d like to book a room please.

Narrations
Phrases
Pronunciation
Role-play exercises
Q&A
Online tests
All English-learning resources

Don't Hesitate, Give it a go!

http://www.pbs.org/kcet/tavissmiley/special/forums/

Ví dụ: "Come on now class, best foot forward or we'll never get to the parliament house on time" (nào cả lớp, chúng ta phải cố gắng hết sức nếu không chúng ta sẽ không thể đến tòa nhà quốc hội đúng giờ).

"To be on the back foot" nghĩa là ở thế thủ (to be on the defensive ). Ví dụ: "The football team were on the back foot for most of the game and were lucky to only lose by five goals!" Xét về vị trí, giả như bạn đang ở dưới chân cầu thang (be at the foot of the stairs) hay dưới chân núi (the foot of a mountain). Trong cả hai trường hợp, bạn đều đứng ở dưới và ngước nhìn lên trên (in both cases you would be at the bottom looking up).

"Dead on your feet" lại mang nghĩa mệt mỏi, không gư ợng được (to be extremely tired). Giả như: I wanted to stay at the party till dawn but was dead on my feet by mid-night" (mình muôn ở lại bữa tiệc đến sáng nhưng đến giữa đêm thì không gượng nổi nữa). Cũng là mệt mỏi, nhưng do bạn đứng quá lâu hoặc vận động quá nhiều hãy dùng "my legs are killing me!" (chân mỏi/đau muốn chết!). "One foot in the grave" (ngấp nghé cửa lỗ) là cách dùng không lấy gì làm lịch sự lắm, khi ám chỉ ai đó quá già và sắp chết. Nếu như có người chết thật, chúng ta dùng "they are six foot under".

"Back on your feet", bạn khỏe trở lại sau khi đã ốm một thời gian (you are in better health after being ill). Ví dụ: "My grandmother was in bed for a week with the flu, but she's back on her feet again now" (mẹ tôi cảm cúm suốt một tuần, nhưng hiện giờ là đã khoẻ hẳn). Trong trường hợp bạn "go into something feet first" nghĩa là bạn rất thận trọng (cautious) và thích thử mọi thứ trước (to test things out first). Ðôi khi trong cuộc sống bạn phải "to get your feet wet", nghĩa là bạn phải thử cho biết như thế nào/cho có kinh nghiệm: Ví dụ, "I wanted to go directly into the first team but the coach said should get my feet wet with the reserve team first" (tôi muốn chơi ngay cho đội hình chính thức, nhưng huấn luyện viên khuyên tôi nên chơi trong đội hình dự bị trước đã).

Then the socket packet pocket has an error to report!
If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash,

So your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse,
Then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang,
'Cause as sure as I'm a poet, the sucker's gonna hang!

Listening to body language

Nik Peachey, trainer and materials writer, British Council

Body language isn't something that naturally springs to mind when we think about developing our students' listening skills. After all, you can't hear body language. It does, however, play a key role, especially at the subconscious level, in communication and an awareness of it and how it can vary from culture to culture, can be particularly important in helping students to develop their ability to understand in a real environment.
• The features of body language
o Eye contact
o Facial expression
o Proximity
o Posture
o Gesture
• Why I teach body language
• How to teach body language
• Conclusion

The features of body language

Body language is made up of a whole range of features many of which we combine together without ever thinking about what it is we are doing or what we are expressing.
Eye contact can have a very significant influence when you are interacting with them.
• It can play a key role in helping to establishing rapport and failing to make eye contact in many cultures is associated with being dishonest or having something to hide.
• Eye contact also plays an important role in turn taking during conversation. Among a group of people, a speaker will often make eye contact with the person he or she wants a response from. Someone who wants to enter or interject in a conversation will catch the eye of the person speaking to indicate that they want to interrupt, and equally someone who no longer wants to listen will avoid eye contact.
• People who know each other well can communicate mutual understanding with a single look.
• Eye contact is also a way of communicating attraction.
Facial expression is one of the most obvious and flexible forms of communication and can easily convey mood, attitude, understanding, confusion and a whole range of other things.
Proximity is a far less obvious form of body language but can be equally as meaningful. It is also something that can easily be misinterpreted as it can vary so much from culture to culture.
• Many British people require a lot of 'private space' and will often stand much further away from people than other nationalities whilst talking to them. They seldom touch each other whilst speaking.
• Breaking these invisible boundaries can either make them very uncomfortable or signal attraction.
Posture can communicate a number of things.
• Your posture can convey a whole range of attitudes, from interest or the lack of it, to degrees of respect or subordination.
• Speakers often use posture to punctuate what they are saying, shifting forward in their seat or leaning in towards their interlocutor to punctuate an important point, or slumping back to indicate that they have finished making a point.
Gesture can be used to replace verbal communication.
• Different finger, thumb or hand gestures can convey a range of meanings in different cultures, from insults to approval or even attraction.
• Many good speakers or storytellers use hand gestures to illustrate their stories.
• It can also form part of punctuation with head nods and hand movements, which relate to the stress, rhythm and tempo of their sentences. Speakers who use their hands a lot often let them drop at the end of a sentence. Heads often nod down when words in sentences are stressed.
• One of the most obvious and in many ways useful gestures is pointing. "It's over there." "I want that one."
Why I teach body language
But if we use all these things subconsciously in our own language, so do we really need to 'teach' them in the classroom? For me the answer is yes. Although we do use and interpret all these factors in our first language communications, I believe that they aren't necessarily automatically transferable to the language we are learning.
• Many students, especially when listening to a second language, focus so heavily on hearing and understanding 'the words' people are saying that they suffer from a form of cognitive overload. There is just too much incoming information for them to process and they miss many of these subtler messages.
• When teachers deal with listening in class, this is most commonly done with the use of recorded text on audio tape or CD, so these more visual factors in the communication are neglected in our students' second language development.
• Many of these traits of communication can have different meanings or be interpreted in completely different ways in different cultures.
How to teach body language
So how can we deal with body language and help our students to interpret it.
For me one of the most useful mediums for this has been video and particularly video without the sound. Whenever I use video clips in class with my students I always play them through at least once without the sound on first.
There are a number of different tasks that I've used depending on the type of clip being shown.
• It's often interesting to play the clip though and get students to speculate about the relationships of the people in the scene.
o Who is emotionally closest or involved with which other characters?
o What's the relationship between characters?
o Who is feeling angry?
o What is each person feeling or thinking?
• You can also try to get students to predict what they think characters are talking about or even what they are saying? If there level is low then they can predict what kinds of things they would be saying in their mother tongue?
• If you have access to, or can transcribe the script for the clips you use, you can get your students to try to act out the scene using the script before they hear it. Just let them watch first and think about what the character they have to play is likely to be thinking or feeling. This gets the students attempting to interpret their body language and express it through the way they read the script.
• I've also found it interesting to do cultural comparisons using a scene from the target culture with a similar scene on a video from their own culture. Just choose something fairly straight forward, like a group of friends in a café or restaurant and aks students to look for differences in the way they interact.
o Do they touch when they meet?
o How close do they sit when they talk?
o Do they touch whilst talking?
o Do they make eye contact?
o Do they openly express any emotions?
• If you can't find parallel clips, then you could just watch a clip from the target culture and ask your students to think about how the scene would be different if it were in their country.
• Getting students to view silently before they listen to a scene or video clip can also helps them to look for 'subtext'. It is often the case that things are being implied which aren't stated in words. Getting students to focus on these factors can help to raise their awareness of the non-verbal communication, which is happening.
• If you have time, try preparing two 'false' scripts for a scene. These can be slight variations on the authentic one. Then give the three scripts to the students and get them to watch the clip silently and deduce which of the scripts is the correct one.
• If you can't get access to video from the target culture then you can still use clips from the students' mother culture. Things like politicians speaking or televised debates where there are a number of people round a table discussing something can be really useful. You can pause and get students to predict who will be speaking next, or who is making a point.

Conclusion
I believe that whatever kind of silent viewing you do and whatever you choose to focus on will ultimately help your students to understand when it comes to listening. They will at least have developed a conceptual framework for what they need to understand and will have built up some expectations of what they will hear. Listening should not be an activity we do divorced from visual context. What we see is part of the comprehension experience and body language forms a large part of how we communicate our message, even if at time we are unaware of it. Comprehension of body language may not help them when it comes to expressing themselves, but it's surprising just how much you can understand without ever hearing a word. If you don't believe me, why not try turning the volume off the next time you are watching TV. You'll be surprised.

Oxford English Grammar"
Oxford University Press (1996-03-28) | ISBN 0198612508 | 672 Pages | PDF |11.4 Mb

Written by one of the world's leading grammarians, The Oxford English Grammar is a completely new book which combines an authoritative review of and topic reference for English grammar. Opening with an outline of national, regional, and social variation in English, the book details descriptive and prescriptive approaches, and attitudes to English amongst both native and non-native speakers. This is followed by an account of the development of grammar, and a review of modern approaches to this complex subject. The central section of the book is a presentation of current English grammar at sentence, clause, phrase, and word level; with the last chapters covering grammar in relation to discourse, word-formation, lexis, pronunciation and intonation, punctuation, and spelling. A full index is provided, and examples of usage are drawn from a wide range of sources, including use of the new International Corpus of English at University College London. Written in a readable and absorbing style, The Oxford English Grammar is an essential reference for English-speakers around the world.

http://i19.servimg.com/u/f19/11/40/94/37/th/5zmkzt12.gif

Before you start your study of grammar and writing skills, you may want to get an idea of how much you already know and how much you need to learn. If that's the case, take the pretest that follows.
The pretest is 50 multiple-choice questions covering all the lessons in this book. Naturally, 50 questions can't cover every single concept or rule you will learn by working through this book. So even if you get all of the questions on the pretest right, it's almost guaranteed that you will find a few ideas or rules in this book that you didn't already know. On the other hand, if you get a lot of the answers wrong on this pretest, don't despair. This book will show you how to get better at grammar and writing, step by step.

So use this pretest just to get a general idea of how much of what's in this book you already know. If you get a high score on this pretest, you may be able to spend less time with this book than you originally planned. If you get a low score, you may find that you will need more than 20 minutes a day to get through each chapter and learn all the grammar and mechanics concepts you need.

Ebooks - Ship or Sheep? - An Intermediate Pronunciation Course - Third edition (2006)

Author: Ann Baker
Publisher: Cambridge University Press, 2006
File size: 133 MB
File type: MP3 160k

Ship or Sheep?
An Intermediate Pronunciation Course

• Third edition

This fully revised edition of the classic pronunciation title is now in full colour with updated artwork. Faithful to the original style, the book retains its simplicity, with the emphasis on minimal pairs, and makes pronunciation practice light-hearted and accessible. Each unit offers comprehensive practice of sounds, with additional work on stress and intonation, and the accompanying audio CDs give lots of listening and pronunciation practice.

The book is available in a pack (comprising book and 4 audio CDs) for self-study, or separately for classroom use. Unlike the original edition, there is no separate Teacher's Book.

For Ship or Sheep?

• EASY TO USE Full teaching rubrics allow the material to be used both for self-study and classroom use. Stand-alone units allow you to focus on sounds which you find difficult.
• SYSTEMATIC Each unit offers comprehensive practice of sounds, with additional work on stress and intonation.
• MORE AUDIO Four audio CDs give lots of listening and pronunciation practice.
• FULL COLOUR Attractive full colour artwork aids understanding and makes the material memorable.

Cambridge Grammar in Use and Pronunciation in Use and Practice CDs

Cambridge Grammar in use and Pronunciation in use and Practice CDs
RS | 890 Mb | CD, PDFs and Audio

If you were to ask one hundred students of English what they would like to improve upon the most, or what area of English gave them the most reason for concern, experience tells me that English pronunciation would more than likely top their list - or it would certainly have a well worn place in the top three. Add to this suggestion the idea that if a similar survey were taken among 100 teachers, pronunciation has a very good chance of coming high up on the list of areas in which they felt somewhat less prepared to teach, or an area in which they feel there is a lack of straightforward, accessible and easy to use material, available for both teachers and students.
